One installer says the cartons must sit for several days. Another says the product can go down immediately. Both statements can be reasonable for different products—and either can be wrong when applied to the wrong floor.
The useful question is not “Does flooring need 48 hours?” It is “What must be true of this product, this room and this substrate before installation starts?”
There are three separate readiness gates
- The building: enclosed, appropriately conditioned and ready for the specified finish.
- The flooring: stored, inspected and conditioned as the exact instructions require.
- The substrate and installation system: suitable test results, preparation and any required adhesive conditions.
Passing one does not pass the others. Cartons waiting in a room do not establish that a concrete substrate meets the installation system’s moisture requirements. A warm room does not establish that wood delivered from different conditions has reached the required moisture relationship.
Somerset’s engineered-wood guidelines call for recorded site, substrate and flooring conditions. Bruce’s solid-wood instructions separately require dry completed wet work and suitable moisture/site conditions. These are reasons to confirm readiness, not reasons to add an arbitrary waiting period to every project.
For wood, time is not the whole measurement
Wood exchanges moisture with its environment. Chelsea Plank’s technical explanation describes wood expanding or contracting as its moisture content changes. The intended occupied conditions matter because a briefly heated construction site may differ from the home’s later living conditions.
Mullican’s solid-wood manual explicitly bases proper acclimation on moisture readings rather than elapsed time alone. Ask the installer what readings and acceptance criteria apply to the exact floor/substrate combination and how the results will be recorded.
A quoted “three days” can be a scheduling allowance without being a guaranteed finish line. Conversely, extra days in unsuitable storage do not prove progress toward suitable conditions. This article does not supply universal wood-moisture thresholds; the installer must use the relevant product and test requirements.
Vinyl and laminate do not share one rule
These inspected examples show the differences. They are examples from identified instructions, not current installation permission for every product sold under each brand.
| Example | What its instructions distinguish |
|---|---|
| Tarkett NuGen Click | No product acclimation requirement, alongside stated room-conditioning requirements. |
| CALI Plus WPC | A typical 24–48-hour conditioning period and specific packaging guidance. |
| Karndean rigid core, inspected regional guide | Conditional residential guidance that changes when material has faced extreme temperatures. |
| Quick-Step LMP Hydroseal laminate, inspected regional guide | A stated packaged acclimation period and additional guidance for conditions outside the listed range. |
See the actual instructions from Tarkett, CALI, Karndean and Quick-Step. The important distinction is that no separate product wait does not mean no environmental requirements.
The archived Mannington ADURA Rigid guide similarly separates no specifically required acclimation from installing close to intended occupied service temperature. Since instructions and product lines change, have the supplier provide the current US version covering the cartons on your order.
Do not open every carton “to help”
Packaging instructions can differ even within a material family. Allwood’s installation manual distinguishes how its solid and engineered products are handled. The inspected Quick-Step laminate guide has its own packaged-conditioning instructions. Use the instruction for the actual floor rather than a general rule about spreading all boards around the house.
Ask where the delivery should be stored, whether cartons stay sealed or are opened in a specified way, and what room conditions must already exist. Confirm this before the truck arrives. A garage, porch or newly wet room should not be assumed acceptable because it is convenient.
Our delivery-to-installation readiness record
Use one short record with the installer:
- Identify: manufacturer, collection, model/product code, material and installation method.
- Attach: the current applicable instruction version and its conditioning section.
- Record delivery: date, storage location and any unusual transport/storage exposure known to the supplier.
- Confirm room conditions: who checks them, when they must be established and how they will continue.
- Confirm tests: which flooring/substrate readings or other acceptance checks are required and who records them.
- Release installation: name the responsible installer and the actual requirements that passed.
This turns a vague delay into a checkable decision. If the instruction requires a minimum period, record when the specified conditions and packaging arrangement began—not just when cartons reached the driveway. If the product has no separate wait under qualifying conditions, ask which conditions have been confirmed.
What to agree before scheduling
Confirm whether the planned start date is provisional pending readiness. Ask who arranges a return visit if the room or substrate is unsuitable, and whether the quote includes storage, environmental checks and required tests. Schedule wet trades and room preparation so they do not invalidate the flooring plan.
Do not accept an extra universal waiting period as a substitute for the specified checks. Do not waive those checks just because the crew is booked. A useful handoff states what passed, how it was checked and which instruction it satisfies.
