A fixed kitchen island is not automatically equivalent to a freestanding table. Many floating-floor systems require fixed cabinets and islands to be installed independently of the planks so the floor can move as designed. Confirm the exact flooring, installation method, fixture weight and anchoring plan before either trade starts. There is no single furniture-weight rule for every floating floor.
The floor plan shows continuous planks across the kitchen. The cabinet plan shows an island on top. Each drawing looks straightforward until the two installation requirements meet. Flooret’s cabinet guidance distinguishes floating floors from fixed installations and anchored islands from freestanding ones. The practical question is not simply whether the floor can carry weight; it is whether the planned fixture interferes with that flooring system.
First identify what “floating” means in this project
A floating finish is not fixed to the base in the same way as a fully bonded or mechanically fastened floor. Tarkett’s floating-wood instructions, page 2, explain the need for movement and caution against locking the surface with heavier objects. These are system principles, not permission to apply its UK spacing requirements to a different US product.
Some products permit more than one installation method. Kährs explicitly distinguishes floating wood from fully bonded installation when discussing fixed loads. Confirm the method actually specified on the quote. A statement about a glued-down version does not automatically apply to the same board floated elsewhere.
Our fixture map: classify before choosing the sequence
| Item | Record | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in cabinet or island | Footprint, support/anchoring design, countertop and utilities | How is it installed independently of the floating finish? |
| Freestanding furniture or island | Size, loaded weight, feet/contact area and maker’s restrictions | Does the exact floor permit this use without restricting movement? |
| Appliance | Product, service access and required clearances | What do both the floor and appliance instructions require? |
| Partition, track or other fixed fitting | Location and proposed attachment | Will its fastening or base restrain the flooring? |
This is an original coordination worksheet, not a structural-load calculation. “Not anchored” is useful information but does not settle every heavy-furniture case. Ask the floor maker about unusual concentrated loads or fixtures rather than assigning a universal pounds-per-foot limit.
The product instructions often settle the cabinet question
Several independently written guides state the constraint directly:
- Mannington Essentials, page 3, says not to install cabinets or kitchen islands on that floating floor.
- Karndean’s US 5G rigid-core guide, page 1, directs permanent fixtures to be installed before the product.
- Audacity’s North American WPC manual says not to install kitchen cabinets directly over the floor.
- NovaFloor’s older NovaCore HPC manual, page 1, similarly excludes cabinets and islands above its floating surface. Use the current guide for any actual NovaFloor purchase.
The consistent planning lesson is to obtain the applicable instruction early. It is not to copy one manufacturer’s gap dimension into every kitchen. Product construction, layout and approved method determine the detail.
Fastening through a floating floor is another restraint
The footprint is only part of the coordination problem. Mohawk’s RevWood Plus guide, page 1, warns against constraining movement with glue, nails, screws, hardware or other fixed obstructions. CALI’s engineered-bamboo guide, page 5, also prohibits screwing or nailing cabinetry or permanent fixtures to a floating floor.
Do not improvise a fixing detail from this article. An island can include electrical, plumbing or gas services, a heavy countertop and stability requirements. Have the relevant trades coordinate its support and attachment with the flooring instructions. The aim is to preserve both the fixture’s safe installation and the flooring system’s required movement.
Why ordinary furniture and appliances need their own answer
Flooret’s guidance permits certain freestanding islands and appliances on its products while treating built-in, bolted islands differently. That is a useful product-specific distinction, not a claim that every appliance is acceptable on every floating system. Kährs also distinguishes moderately heavy furniture from major fixed loads. Record the intended use and ask for a written answer if the situation is unusual.
Floor & Decor’s support guidance warns that fixed cabinets or fixtures above floating flooring may affect warranty. This does not decide a particular warranty claim. Keep the exact guide, invoice and any written manufacturer advice with the project record.
The handoff to agree before materials arrive
- Flooring contractor: identify the product, installation method, movement provisions and any restrictions relevant to each item on the fixture map.
- Cabinet contractor: supply the actual island/cabinet footprint and support/anchoring requirements, including countertop and utility coordination.
- Project record: mark which trade completes each stage and which details need manufacturer confirmation.
- Visual finish: agree how the transition around the fixed item will be covered without changing the required movement arrangement.
- Changes: reassess if the island becomes larger, receives a stone top, gains anchoring or changes position.
Do not wait until after installation to discover that “continuous flooring” and “fixed island” were drawn under different assumptions. If the floor is already installed, photograph the condition and ask the manufacturer and qualified installer to propose an approved solution. Do not dismantle an island, cut around it or loosen a utility-connected fixture based on a generic internet tip.
